I spent the evening with my brother's family last night, and got to participate in their family Home Evening. It was so cute. Their kids are still quite young, but they already have a chart that they use to determine who is responsible for which part, and the kids love spinning the wheel to see who gets what assignment the next week.
My brother was responsible for the lesson - We talked about the Word of Wisdom and he read the story out of "Stories from the Doctrine and Covenants", and then asked my nephew questions about it. My nephew is pretty smart, and he talked about how Jesus does not want us to smoke or drink alcohol, and he only wants us to eat things that are good for us, like Milk and water.
My sister-in-law was responsible for the song, so we sang "In Our Lovely Deseret", which talks about the Word of Wisdom. Actually, the three of us sang while the kids looked at us like we were pretty weird. We all remember singing that song a lot in primary as a kid, but no one seems to sing it much anymore. That's really a shame, since it has a good message for kids in it.
My nephew was responsible for the activity, and he selected to play "Simon Says" (he actually called it "Teacher says"). Picture 3 adults trying to keep up with a little boy on that one. After we finished with the activity, he said family prayer and blessed the refreshments.
My niece had the refreshments (courtesy of Aunt Tracie), and felt pretty proud of herself - especially because she gets to sit in a booster seat instead of a highchair now. She also knows how to fold her arms and bow her head for prayer.
My nephew wanted to know what the cat's job was - but we said that would be pretty hard because cat's can't read or sing, and if they did refreshments all we would get was cat food. He thought that sounded yucky, so decided it was ok the cat didn't have an assignment.
It was a great evening. I don't get to experience Family Home Evening with an actual family usually, so it was a nice treat for me, and a great example of how even young children can participate and learn how to follow Jesus and feel good about their family.
