Since Independence Day fell on Thursday this year, I thought it would be fun to take an extra day off and have a long weekend and a little relaxing fun. Although I didn't do much of anything on the big day, I did fill it with plenty of Major League Baseball, and I started and finished the latest Sue Grafton Book. Oh - and I cooked myself some bratwurst, because Independence Day should always include bratwurst.
Friday Fun
Friday morning I had an interior designer come in to talk about taking down the vertical blinds that hang over the sliding glass door. Although I did have fun dreaming and choosing cool draperies, the estimate was a ridiculously large amount. Needless to say, I won't be using that company.
After a quick lunch, I got myself down to the Jordan River Temple for an endowment session. Although I was glad to get there, let's just say that I was not the sharpest tool in the shed. I forgot some things, did some things out of order that I normally wouldn't, and was plain brainless. In this case I hope it was the thought that counts.
Arriving home from the Temple, I relaxed a little bit reading the latest Ensign issue. Then I drove up Emigration Canyon to meet Inge and her friend CarolAnn at Ruth's Diner. It's been a favorite of ours for years, and it was great to sit on the patio, in the cool canyon air, have a yummy dinner, and listen to some fun acoustic music.
After dinner we headed back down into town to see "Monsters University", the latest offering from Pixar. It was great fun, and a great way to top off a fun day.
Saturday Fun
This afternoon I met up with Julie and Janeen for a drive and picnic up one of the canyons. We stopped off at Zupa's for sandwiches, then drove up to Brighton and Silver Lake for a picnic. It's a favorite spot of mine - there's a small lake with a boardwalk that goes all the way around it, and it's perfect for taking a stroll in the woods without exhausting yourself. The weather was clear and cool, the lake was beautiful, and the sandwiches were tasty. Apparently we weren't the only ones with that idea, as the lake was so crowded. Either I'm a trend-setter, or everyone else was as anxious to get out of the sizzling valley as I was.
After coming back home, I finished some chores, got in my Dodger gear to watch the Boys in Blue take on the Giants, and made a new recipe for "Almost Lasagna". It's gooey and cheesy, but full of veggies. Although it's likely not very physically healthy, it should be emotionally satisfying.
All in all a fun weekend, and I'm sorry to see it end.
