Yesterday was...THE BIRTHDAY. Now that I'm of a "certain
age", THE BIRTHDAY may not be looked forward to with quite as much
pleasure, but it's still an occasion where it's all about me for a day, and I'm
definitely down with that. The celebration really went on for most of the week,
with cards and gifts and packages arriving from my thoughtful family. And some of
the friends took me out Friday night for dinner and a play at the Hale
Theater.
But on the actual day - it started off with a 45 minute ride on the bike,
which was indoors, owing to the impending thunderstorm. But it was
invigorating nonetheless. I followed that up with a quick walk down to
the pastry shop, where I picked up a coconut danish, which made for a most delicious
breakfast (thank heaven for the bike ride earlier).
After breakfast, I did a bit of cleaning and laundry, and the family started
checking in. Mom and Dad and some of the nieces called. A little while
later, I got to video chat with one of my sisters and her girls (video chat is
awesome!), followed by calls and text messages from more of the sibs and their
kids. Then I spent the afternoon holed up while the torrential downpour
went on outside. I finished a mystery novel and in general was a total couch potato.
Later in the day I met up with some of the girls for dinner at a place
called the Bayleaf Cafe, which is a little bar and grill downtown. The
big attraction for me was the Southern food on the menu. And I confess I
ended up going a little crazy - fried pickles, hushpuppies (fried), a (fried) shrimp po' boy
sandwich, all dipped in remoulade sauce, and washed down with diet coke from a
mason jar. HEAVENLY! We then finished the evening off by watching Men in Black III (awesome!).
I have to say, I enjoyed the attention, and felt loved, which I think I needed a little bit. All in all, a great day.
