Last weekend was the annual Wasatch Community Garden Spring Plant Sale, and as is our custom, I met up with my friends Rosann and Richard to look over all the plants and make my selections for this year.
I look forward to the plant sale every year now. It is such fun - There is always a great turnout, and an awesome feeling of community, as people come from all over town, and everyone is happy and pleasant and helpful. The garden staff are knowledgeable, and there are usually booths of locally made products available for sampling.
This year the selection was so amazing, that I went a little crazy and got even more plants than I normally do. I ended up with:
3 varieties of cherry tomatoes - Chadwick Cherry, Blondkofchen (should be white or yellow), and Isis Candy.
4 varieties of peppers - a poblano (should make a great Chile Relleno), a paprika (spicy and sweet), a yellow pepper (golden marconi), and a chocolate pepper (gets a nice dark chocolate color - does not taste like chocolate, which would be too weird).
1 gray zucchini
1 pinglung long Eggplant (which will grow long and slender).
And then my usuals, basil (cannot WAIT for the amazing pesto I plan to make), and strawberries - I had to start with fresh plants, as mine didn't survive the winter.
After the plant sale and a quick bite of breakfast, it was off to WalMart for 3 large bags of garden soil and a few more pots. This time around I came up with my own mixture - Miracle Gro Organic Garden Soil, Miracle Gro Moisture Control Garden Soil, and Miracle Grow Garden Soil. For good measure I threw in a set of wind chimes - no more feeding the birds this year. Lesson learned.
Came home, mixed the soil, planted the aforementioned plants, gave them a little dose of fertilizer (I use Ozmocote), and a big dose of water, and voila! The container garden is in!
That was last weekend, and thanks to plenty of warm weather this week, as of today, great progress has already been made. My little zucchini and eggplant have already tripled in size, and everything else is going great guns. Here's to a successful garden!
