The Salt Lake Tribune came out with a list this week of what they said were the Top 10 Burgers in Utah. Being a burger connossieur, I of course took notice. The Trib declared that the #1 burger in Utah was at a place called Dairy Delight in Tooele. So, as is becoming our annual 4th of July custom, the Triple D Divas went off to Tooele (Too-illa to those who live there, and Too-lee to the rest of us) to see what the fuss was all about.
Apparently, the burger they're most known for is the Old Fashioned. Which, since it was an entire half pound of meat, I decided against, and went with the quarter pound cheeseburger instead. It came in a combo with tater tots, which was a nice change of pace. And my heart leapt briefly when I saw that they had fried pickles on the menu. It abruptly deflated when they arrived and they were pickle spears instead of slices. They were tasty, but obviously these folks don't know their fried pickle etiquette. I mean, no self respecting Southerner would do pickle spears. Nonetheless, it was a good burger, and the tots were a good treat. Number one burger in Utah? Probably not. But fun to try it.
After leaving Dairy Delight, we drove around to see some of the sites - Grantsville, Erda (three po-dunk towns in the same afternoon), the Miller Sportspark. Along the way, we happened to see a historic site, the Benson Grist Mill and Farm, which was originally built by the LDS Apostle Ezra T. Benson. So we stopped off there to look through the buildings and the country store. I found a retro bottle of RC in the country store that I quickly snapped up (just give me an RC and a moon pie), and we also played around a little bit. And the ladies running the place were kind enough to take our pictures - they probably weren't used to having visitors very often.
By this time we'd worked off the burger and tots, so we headed back into Too-lee for some ice cream at the Cold Stone. I've been to Cold Stone several times now, but this one was a pleasant surprise. Because the boys who were working the counter say songs and danced for tips. Apparently they even had to audition for a spot there. It was really fun. And their tip jar was pretty full.
